Five Reasons to Get a Small Pet

Five Reasons to Get a Small Pet

If your child has been begging for a guinea pig or hamster we say go for it! Small pets are great options and we’ve got 5 reasons why.

First, small pets teach responsibility. You knew we’d include that! They’re easier to take care of than a larger animal like a dog or cat, but they still need food, water, and a clean place to sleep and play.

Next, small pets are entertaining.  Hamsters and gerbils will make tunnels, chew toilet paper rolls, and chase each other around. Guinea pigs and rabbits can be let out to roam around the yard (closely supervised).  They’re easy to keep safely in their cages and contain to one room if you want to let them out.

Feeding them is inexpensive.  The best treats for many small pets are probably already on hand in your kitchen: leafy greens, carrots, apples, etc. While there are specific foods for your pets, your supplemental options for them are already at home! The same goes for toys, really. Hamsters and Gerbils willl really be thrilled with paper towel rolls!

Lifespan – The lifespan of these creatures varies greatly.  Guinea pigs will live 5-7 years, while hamsters and gerbils will only live a few years.

A note of caution: When buying any of these, get 2 of the same sex. Gerbils, hamsters and guinea pigs are very social creatures and they will be happier with a friend around. Unless you want lots of babies though, we do recommend getting 2 of the same sex!
