Vampire Shrimp Care
Vampire shrimp are a fun addition to your planted tanks. Native to Western Africa and South America, these guys are typically peaceful, tranquil and shy. For that reason, adding plants and other “hiding places” like rocks and decorative pieces is a good idea.
These shrimp tend to like some space, so at least a 20′ gallon tank (preferably horizontal so they have room to walk) is best. As filter feeders the shrimp will use their tiny “fanned” hands to grasp food as it floats by. That means they need a steady, oxygen rich current and floating food. The plants do a good job of adding to that!
While they are shy, Vampire Shrimp seem to do just fine with other shrimp, especially Bamboo Shrimp. They are fairly easy to care for, as long as you’re taking good care of your tank as a whole. Partial water changes, steady ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels and good lighting are all ways you can keep your Vampire Shrimp healthy!
